Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty Exhibit at Star Trek Las Vegas 2019

A series of pictures from the Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty exhibit at the 2019 Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, as part of the promotional push for the upcoming Star Trek: Picard show. The exhibit’s conceit is that these are items curated by Starfleet celebrating Admiral Picard’s career.

While most of the props are reproductions (the originals lost or auctioned off years ago), the uniforms on display were all costumes worn on screen by Patrick Stewart.

Patrick Stewart at Star Trek Las Vegas 2018

For the past few years, we’ve gone to Vegas for vacation, which just happens to coincide with the big Star Trek convention held annually at the Rio. Shortly after William Shatner’s panel on Saturday, the host advised that everyone would want to stay in the room for a big announcement. Alex Kurtzman emerged soon after, and after a brief preamble about Trek’s future on TV, he announced a new show focused on Captain Picard starring Patrick Stewart. Stewart emerged, and well, here you go…

The Crew Chief — a thing I found while rummaging around old boxes in the garage this weekend. I don’t know who made this, but I remember seeing it in the early ‘90s. This version is from later, because someone replaced “35-10” (the real dress & appearance standard) with that weak-ass 36-2903 nonsense. Otherwise, an accurate representation of my former trade. ⁣

A 1000 piece puzzle that I picked up at #STLV a couple of weeks ago and just completed. It features posters that were created by Juan Ortiz for each episode of the original series. He’s also created similar handbills for TNG and the animated series. ⁣

I’m sure attendance wasn’t mandatory, but *highly* encouraged.
This was in the Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty exhibit at Star Trek Las Vegas this year.

Still Life Cafe, Independence, CA. The Eastern Sierra form the backdrop of this surprising French Café, owned and operated by an actual French family.

Mizpah Hotel, Tonopah, NV. Built in 1907, this hotel fell into disrepair until it was restored a few years ago. It’s supposedly haunted, but I’ve stayed here a few times, including the most haunted floor and one of the haunted rooms, but you don’t need ghost stories to sell this place. It’s like staying in a well-appointed frontier hotel, but with indoor plumbing. Plus it’s got a great restaurant and bar, and the best chicken-fried steak this side the Rockies. ⁣

Austin, NV, Pop 340. Nestled on the slopes of the Toiyabe Range and sitting at an elevation of 6,600 ft, this town was once the heart of a silver mining boom in the area after riders from the Pony Express supposedly found silver ore here. The town is notable for having frontier churches still in regular use, as well as having the oldest hotel in Nevada. For general aviation enthusiasts, Austin has a nearby airport (KTMT, ASQ). ⁣

Juvenile Night Heron

Juvenile Night Heron. I believe it’s the black-crowned variety.

A Juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) at the Upland Hills Country Club golf course. Taken at the pond near the 4th tee box area.

Though these birds are common around wetland areas in North America, this is the first one I’ve seen in our neck of the woods. I’m not sure where this juvenile came from, as there were no signs of any others in the area. He disappeared the next day.

B-25J “Pacific Princess”

B-25J 43-28204 “Pacific Princess” — The only wartime action this plane saw was in the movies (Catch-22, 1941, Pearl Harbor), but it was also used as a firefighting aircraft in the 1950s and flew off the deck of the Carl Vinson in 1995 for the 50th anniversary of WWII’s end. Beautiful and well-maintained aircraft.
